Post Op Instructions Extractions Day 7

We wanted to reach out today to say hello, and to follow-up regarding your recent extraction. At this point in time, you should have returned to normal eating and drinking habits, and be free of discomfort and swelling.

If however, you experience any of the below complications or need follow-up treatment, please give us a call. Dry Socket. If you experience significant pain in the extraction site two to three days post-procedure, you’re likely suffering from dry socket. This temporary condition arises either when a blood clot doesn’t form in the extraction site, or when it is accidentally removed because a patient takes up smoking, or uses a straw too early after surgery.

Bone sequestra. A rather common occurrence after extractions, a “bone sequestra,” is a small piece of bone or tooth that splintered off during surgery and has now begun to work its way from the extraction site and through the healed gum tissue. Typically you would experience this several week to months after surgery.

Suture removal. While many extractions use absorptive sutures that do not need to be removed, some surgeries require the removal of sutures. Be sure to follow through on your appointment to have your sutures removed on time if this applies to your case. Bone degeneration. Tooth extraction causes a rather immediate loss of bone tissue in the jaw, and unless appropriate measures are taken to prevent this loss, it can lead to a further weakening of nearby seated teeth. Dental implants and bone grafts can prevent this resorption of bone tissue, so you’ll want to be sure to maintain all of your follow-up care appointments with your dentist moving forward.

As always, if you need anything at all, please reach out – we’re always here for you at Todays Dental @ Cayce. Thank you for the continued trust and the opportunity to deliver your dental care.
