Orthodontics

Orthodontics is a part of dentistry which deals with the correction of crooked teeth and any jaw related problems. Basically jaws which are short or large and not in proper alignment. Orthodontists help in making a treatment plan according to the patient. And then go on with treatments procedures like providing braces to correct the crowding or appliances to correct skeletal defects.

The problems which arise with crooked teeth are that these are not present in the arches properly and thus can lead to caries. It's hard to keep them clean by just brushing and also causes aesthetic problems. Moreover it can lead to periodontal effects which can cause tooth loss or TMJ diseases.

Thus an orthodontist helps you in taking care of your jaws and the malocclusions of your teeth.

So, how to know whether you need an Orthodontist or not ?

When you come to us we check your whole profile clinically. The jaws are monitored for any skeletal defects. Also the dentition present is checked for crowding or spaces . A complete dental history with various radiographs like lateral cephalometry or OPGs are taken to diagnose the problem .

Following are the commonly seen problems that suggest an orthodontic treatment :

  • Crowding : when teeth are crowded in the arch and arranged in a very rough manner due to short jaws or too many teeth present.
  • Cross bites : when you bite the upper arch teeth do not overlap the lower arch teeth , it’s opposite of that.
  • Open bites: when you can’t close your mouth or bite in occlusion properly.
  • Spacing of the teeth : Teeth which are spread in the arches and have gaps in them due to less number of teeth or short jaw.

There are many other problems like:

  • Overbite or midline shift of your teeth which require orthodontists like in Class ll malocclusion cases or class lll malocclusion cases.
  • Skeletal class iii or skeletal class ii defects require appliances which help the jaws to attain its normal position.
  • Defects like Micrognathia (short jaws) or Macrognathia ( big jaws ) also require orthodontic consultation .
  • Moreover having habits like thumb sucking or mouth breathing requires orthodontic consultation for getting an appliance fabricated which can control such habits and its effects on the dentition.

What are the different treatment modalities by which you can be treated ?

Dental braces are the most common appliance which we all get once in a life to treat our irregular and crowded teeth. Apart from that, Space maintainers are used in children with premature loss of teeth so as to guide the permanent teeth in place. Head gears are another appliance used in controlling the jaw position in place. Same are chin cups which help to guide the forwardly placed chin back to its proper position.
