The cost is shared between the state and federal governments, with the latter covering 70% of the expenses.
To be eligible for Medicaid, you must meet specific criteria, which include:
- Being an elderly, blind, or disabled adult or child
- Females diagnosed with breast cancer or cervical cancer
- Former foster care child up to age 26
- Families in need of medical assistance
- Individuals receiving community or home-based care
- Low-income beneficiaries of specified Medicare programs
Additionally, to qualify for Medicaid, you must be a US citizen or have legal residency status. A valid social security number or federal identification number is required, along with proof of residency in South Carolina, such as a driver’s license or DMV ID card.

- Fluoride treatments every 6 months
- Emergency exams twice every 2 years
- No maximum limits or co-payments
- Coverage for exams, x-rays, cleanings, fillings, extractions, root canals, and partials (pre-authorization required)
Medicaid for Individuals Over 21:
- Biannual exams
- Annual cleanings
- Bitewing x-rays once a year
- Panoramic x-ray (head x-ray) every 3 years
- Full mouth x-ray every 5 years
- Biannual emergency exams
- Maximum coverage of $750 per plan year (July 1 – June 30)
- Co-pay of $3.40 per visit
- Coverage for exams, x-rays, cleanings, fillings, and extractions
