Fixed partial dentures (FPD)

FPD is the most important part of any dental practice which is also said to be the bread and butter ie. the treatment procedure which is the most common one and helps dentists in earning their living. But why is that so ?

Before we go to the why, let’s first try to know what? We mean what is FPD?

So, FPD is a partial denture or an artificial substitute which is luted to any natural teeth or implant that furnishes support to the prosthesis . It is fixed in nature and cannot be removed by the patient easily or on a daily basis.

So,in which state these FPDs are given?

  •  If the patient is willing to maintain good oral hygiene and prefers for FPD in case of missing tooth.
  • If abutment teeth are strong and in good status.
  • If the surrounding and supportive soft tissues are healthy.
  • In cases of missing one or more teeth in the same arches.

Cases in which FPDs are avoided :

  • If the supportive tissues are not healthy or in good condition.
  • If abutment teeth are missing then it’s avoided due to low strength and support.
  • If the patient is in poor general health status and financially unstable because they can’t afford it.
  • If the patient has poor oral hygiene status which can lead to failure of FPD.

What are the various FPD or Fixed Partial Dentures available in the market ?

FPD includes various varieties according to the status of the oral cavity and need of the patient . Few of these are , Crowns , veneers, Inlay,Onlay, Pontics etc.

These are different types which are used accordingly like after endodontic treatment or RCT , crowns are advised so as to help in esthetics and the mastication of food moreover it saves the natural teeth which have weakened due to RCT from mechanical wear and tear. Similarly, veneers are helpful in providing that white pearly smile to patients with unpleasant teeth.

So,what are the functions of FPDs ?

With providing the basic occlusal function and maintains arch or tooth position it maintains the occlusal relation and dentition . It helps in protecting and preserving what is naturally present in the mouth ie. the remaining tooth structures.
